I Love... Water?

In the epic battle between soda and water, my heart has always sided with soda. Even though I know the more soda I drink the worse I feel, I still crave it. It never fails.

I will drink a soda and tell myself, that is it. I’m just having one. But after that one, I’m still thirsty. So guess what? I have another one. But that is it, I try to convince myself, two is the limit.

An hour will go by and I will start to get tired. So in order to keep going I will have yet another soda, telling myself I need the caffeine to keep me awake. Once again, I have tricked myself into believing it is helping me, while the reality of it is I have now had at least 3 sodas and I am still thirsty and tired.

By the 3 o’clock slump, I’m so tired, all I want to do is go to sleep. Since that isn’t an option, I’ll have another soda. Now you would think all that would be a good wake up call not to jump into that vicious cycle the next day. Yet almost every day I do.

Except for Monday, I woke up and told myself I was not going to be tempted and I cracked open that first bottle of water. The first one is always the hardest, mostly if you are not a fan of it. But I managed and the most amazing thing happened, I felt great!

Throughout the day I continued to drink water. And by time 3 o’clock came around, no slump! I wasn't tired at all! It was like all the water I was drinking gave me a burst of energy. I felt like I could conquer the world, or at least the rest of the day.

To most of you this would be a no-brainer:
soda = tired and thirsty
water = wake and not thirsty

So why would anybody choose soda? The same reason most girls choose the bad boy over the nice guy. We know it’s bad for us, but sometimes bad feels good.

  1. I know what you mean. It's as if our brains slow down without water. I wonder why that is...

  2. I feel the same way about chocolate. I know too much is bad for me, but I use it the way you use soda. YIKES.

  3. I use to be a soda holic but now I never drink it. It's funny though how when you drink a lot of soda you don't drink water, and when you drink a lot of water you don't drink soda. It's like your body can only accept one or the other at a time.

  6. That, and who doesn't love the instant gratification of caffeine? It is more addicting than most other drugs. And I say that to myself all the time: Diet Coke or Water? Beer or Water? Water always seems to lose the battle, and I always lose the war against myself.

  8. After months of drinking water regularly (before that I rarely drank it), I can say that I've really adapted to the taste and like to drink it. I never drink soda anymore. I think with things like soda, the less you have it, the less you want it. :)

    Great blog you have here!

  10. I successfully gave up my beloved diet soda a couple of years ago, but even now am afraid to have one sip for fear of falling off the wagon. I keep telling myself to stay away...the soda is addictive, it's made of chemicals and horrid high fructose corn syrup or even worse, artificial sweeteners. Water is so much better for our bodies.

  11. I currently have both sitting next to me, if that tells you anything. I just can't say no to the zero-calorie caffeine boost. If only water had special effects besides you know, being "good" for us and help with bloating....

  14. Switching from soda to water was hard! I still don't much enjoy water, and it has to be ice cold or I can't drink it (though I've also read repeatedly that ice cold water helps one lose weight, too, as the body has to bring the water up to body temperature to process it--or something like that).

Even trickier was getting my husband off soda! I went and bought an inexpensive container with a spigot and now cut up fresh strawberries and orange slices and put them in the water. By later that day, or the next, you have lovely fruit-essence water. My kids love it, too, and when I'm in that slump in the morning where I don't WANT water, I grab some of that first. It has helped.

    Good luck!
